A rare vanilla scoop of October snow on the mountains of Western Pennsylvania rang a bell that drove skiers and riders to closets and racks, pulling down skis and boards, sharpening edges and checking bindings. Another winter is on deck and for Pennsylvania snow sport resorts it means a new season, full of innovation, new trails to explore, a blizzard of new tubing chutes, more glade skiing and upgraded lift comfort. It’s all close to home on the Pennsylvania slopes. Here’s what’s new at a favorite resort less than a tank away.

IN THE EAST

CAMELBACK SKI RESORT, the popular Pocono mountain hot spot near Tannersville has ramped up its snowtubing Utopia to create 38 chutes and become one of the largest tubing spas in the country. Two magic carpet conveyer walkways provide the lift for easier access and more time in the chutes. All of Camelbacks 34 trails and slopes are covered by state-of-the-art snowmaking systems and served by 14 lifts including two high speed quads for day and night skiing along with the expanded snowtubing park. Children’s program get a major boost at SHAWNEE MOUNTAIN this season as new airless snow guns take up positions on the Shawnee Learning Center slopes. The new energy efficient snow blowers are designed to produce more consistent depth to support nightly contour grooming – easier to ski, easier to learn. Shawnee listened when parents asked for a snowboarding program for youngsters between 4 and 6. This season the versatile resort will introduce, “WEEriders”, created to get the younger set up and riding in a controlled environment with an instructor for every 2 sliders. Also look for enhancements to the online reservations system for children’s programs. They make it easier to preset a child’s ski or snowboard rental and spend less time getting out on the hill. Shawnee boasts 23 slopes and trails,  served by 10 lifts, including a high speed quad. The entire mountain is covered by snowmaking with skiing and riding day and night.
